Where do scrap cars go?
The vehicles are shredded and the metal content is recovered for recycling, while in many areas, the rest is further sorted by machine for recycling of additional materials such as glass and plastics. The remainder, known as automotive shredder residue, is put into a landfill.
How to scrap my car?
Canceling your vehicle’s registration removes the vehicle from the Motor Vehicle Register, which means you can’t lawfully use the vehicle on the road.
Only the NZ Transport Agency can cancel a vehicle’s registration if requested by the registered person or an insurance company. We may also cancel the registration without a request in some situations. Need to know more? Click here for the NZTA site.
